Toe Compression

Toe compression garments, including compression toecaps, provide targeted graduated compression to the toes and forefoot to help manage swelling and support lymphatic drainage. Designed to be worn alongside open-toe compression stockings or compression socks, toecaps ensure complete coverage for those managing lower limb lymphoedema or toe swelling.

What Are Compression Toecaps?

Compression toecaps are small garments designed to apply graduated compression to the toes and forefoot area. They are typically worn in combination with open-toe compression hosiery to provide seamless compression from the toes all the way up the leg.

Many compression stockings and socks are available in open-toe styles, which leave the toes exposed. While this can be more comfortable for some wearers, it means the toes don't receive any compression – which can be problematic for those experiencing swelling in the toes or forefoot. Toecaps solve this issue by delivering compression specifically to the toe area.

Who Should Wear Compression Toecaps?

Compression toecaps are commonly recommended for:

  • Lymphoedema – Particularly when swelling affects the toes and forefoot as part of lower limb lymphoedema
  • Toe and forefoot oedema – Localised swelling in the toe area that isn't adequately managed by standard closed-toe hosiery
  • Poor circulation – Supporting blood flow to the extremities
  • Wearing open-toe stockings – When you prefer the comfort or breathability of open-toe hosiery but still need compression on the toes

Toecaps are often worn as part of a comprehensive lower limb compression regime, particularly for those with moderate to severe lymphoedema.

How to Wear Toe Compression

Compression toecaps are designed to be worn underneath open-toe compression stockings, socks, or wraps. The toecap is applied first, covering the toes and forefoot, and then the open-toe hosiery is pulled on over the top, overlapping slightly to ensure continuous compression from toes to leg.

This layered approach ensures there are no gaps in compression coverage, which is particularly important for effective lymphoedema management.

Compression Levels

Our compression toecaps are available at firm compression (20-30mmHg), providing therapeutic-level support suitable for managing lymphoedema and more significant swelling. This compression level is often recommended by lymphoedema specialists and healthcare professionals.

If you're unsure which compression level is appropriate for your needs, consult your GP, lymphoedema nurse, or specialist. Our guide on levels of compression explains the differences between compression classes.

Using Toecaps with Other Compression Garments

Compression toecaps work best as part of a complete compression system. They can be worn with:

For those managing lower limb lymphoedema, combining toecaps with appropriate hosiery ensures complete coverage and more effective fluid management.

Is Toe Compression Right for You?

Compression therapy is suitable for most people, but certain conditions may require medical advice before use. If you have arterial disease, peripheral neuropathy, diabetes, or skin conditions affecting the feet, consult your GP or healthcare provider before wearing compression garments on the toes.
