Who Qualifies for VAT Relief?

VAT relief is applicable when the following conditions are met:

• The individual is “chronically sick or disabled.”
• The goods being purchased are eligible for VAT relief.
• The goods are acquired for personal or domestic use.

A person is considered “chronically sick or disabled” if they have:

• A physical or mental impairment that has a long-term, substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out everyday activities.
• A condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes or arthritis.
• A terminal illness.

This relief does not extend to frail, elderly individuals who are otherwise able-bodied, or anyone with a temporary disability, such as a broken bone.
