Why Choose Activa® Compression Hosiery?

Activa® is one of the UK's most trusted compression hosiery brands, widely prescribed across the NHS and recommended by healthcare professionals nationwide. Manufactured by Lohmann & Rauscher, Activa® hosiery combines advanced knitting technology with high-quality materials to deliver effective graduated compression that's comfortable enough for all-day wear.

The range is specifically designed for patients with venous conditions where oedema (swelling) is not present. For legs with oedema or lymphoedema, consider the ActiLymph® range instead.

Understanding British Standard Compression Classes

Activa® hosiery follows the British Standard compression classification system, which differs from European (RAL) standards. Here's what each class offers:

Class 1 (14-17mmHg) — Provides light compression for early intervention in venous disease, superficial or early varicose veins, tired aching legs, and DVT prevention during long-distance travel or post-operatively.

Class 2 (18-24mmHg) — Provides moderate compression for medium-severity varicose veins and as part of treatment to prevent the occurrence and recurrence of venous leg ulcers. Also suitable for post-operative care and DVT prevention in at-risk groups.

Class 3 (25-35mmHg) — Provides firm compression for severe varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and the treatment and prevention of venous leg ulcers. Typically prescribed for more advanced venous disease.

Activa® Product Styles

The Activa® range offers a variety of styles to suit different needs and preferences:

Below Knee Stockings — The most commonly prescribed style, effective for most venous conditions. Available in closed toe and open toe options across all compression classes.

Thigh Length Stockings — Ideal for patients with painful or protruding varicose veins at the back of the knee, or those who prefer fuller coverage. Requires a suspender belt or body adhesive for secure wear.

Compression Tights — Full-leg coverage in a familiar, easy-to-wear format. Popular with patients who prefer the convenience of tights.

Compression Socks — Available in ribbed and patterned styles, perfect for everyday wear and discreet compression therapy. Great as flight socks for travel.

Stocking Liners — Used as part of a leg ulcer hosiery kit system, worn beneath compression stockings to provide therapeutic compression while protecting wound dressings.

Application & Care

For patients who find compression hosiery difficult to put on, the ActiGlide® application aid makes donning Activa® stockings significantly easier, particularly for those with limited mobility or dexterity. Browse our full range of application aids for additional options.

To maintain compression effectiveness, hand wash or machine wash your Activa® hosiery on a delicate cycle at 40°C with mild detergent. Lay flat to dry — do not tumble dry.

Activa® compression hosiery is not suitable for everyone. Contraindications include arterial insufficiency, arterial disease, ischaemia, and diabetes (unless under specialist supervision). Always consult our Contraindications Guide or speak with a healthcare professional before use.

If you're new to compression therapy or changing your compression class, we recommend being assessed and measured by a suitably trained healthcare professional to ensure optimal fit and therapeutic benefit.
