Compression Tights

Medical compression tights provide graduated support from ankle to waist, helping to manage conditions such as varicose veins, tired aching legs, lymphoedema, and lipoedema. We stock a wide range of compression tights from leading brands including Solidea, JOBST®, SIGVARIS, Juzo®, and Activa® – from sheer, fashionable styles to opaque medical-grade options. For pregnancy support, see our dedicated maternity compression tights.

What Are Compression Tights?

Compression tights are full-length hosiery garments that apply graduated pressure to both legs, from the ankle up to the waist. Unlike regular tights, medical compression tights are engineered to deliver specific, measurable pressure levels that support healthy blood flow and help manage a range of venous and lymphatic conditions.

The graduated compression design means pressure is firmest at the ankle and decreases progressively up the leg. This helps push blood back towards the heart, preventing it from pooling in the lower limbs – a key factor in conditions such as varicose veins, spider veins, and chronic venous insufficiency.

Who Benefits from Compression Tights?

Compression tights are suitable for anyone seeking full-leg support, and are particularly helpful for those with symptoms affecting both legs or the upper thigh area. They're commonly recommended for people experiencing tired, heavy, or aching legs, visible varicose or spider veins, leg swelling (oedema), lymphoedema or lipoedema affecting both legs, poor circulation, and those at risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Compression tights are also a practical choice for people who prefer the convenience of a single garment covering both legs, or who find that individual stockings slip down during wear. For those who are pregnant, we recommend our specialist maternity compression tights, which feature an expandable panel to accommodate a growing bump.

Compression Tights vs Stockings

The choice between compression tights and thigh-high stockings or below-knee stockings often comes down to personal preference and your specific needs. Tights offer seamless coverage of both legs without the need for suspenders or adhesive bands, making them ideal for all-day wear under skirts, dresses, or trousers. They also provide light abdominal support, which some wearers find comfortable.

If your symptoms are limited to one leg or below the knee, individual stockings or compression socks may be more practical. Our team can help you decide which style best suits your needs – simply contact us for guidance.

Choosing the Right Compression Level

We stock compression tights across a range of pressure levels to suit different needs:

Light compression (10-18mmHg) is ideal for mild symptoms, tired legs, prevention during long periods of standing or sitting, and those new to compression therapy. Moderate compression (15-24mmHg) suits more noticeable symptoms, including mild varicose veins, moderate swelling, and post-sclerotherapy care. Firm compression (20-30mmHg) is recommended for significant varicose veins, moderate to severe oedema, lymphoedema management, and DVT prevention.

If you've been prescribed compression by a healthcare professional, they will advise on the appropriate level. If you're unsure which compression strength is right for you, see our guide to levels of compression or speak with your GP or specialist.

Styles and Finishes

Today's compression tights combine therapeutic effectiveness with genuine style. Our range includes sheer and semi-transparent tights that look like regular hosiery, opaque styles for a more matte, covered appearance, fashion tights with patterns, lace details, and textured finishes, and bamboo compression tights for natural breathability and temperature regulation.

Whether you need compression for work, special occasions, or everyday wear, there's a style to suit. Many of our customers are pleasantly surprised by how fashionable medical compression tights can look.

Caring for Your Compression Tights

To maintain the effectiveness of your compression tights, wash them daily in lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoid fabric softeners, which can damage the elastic fibres, and air dry away from direct heat. Most compression tights will last three to six months with proper care. Having two pairs allows you to alternate daily while one pair is drying.

Getting the Right Fit

Proper fit is essential for compression tights to work effectively. Measure your legs first thing in the morning when swelling is minimal, and follow the manufacturer's sizing guide carefully. If you're between sizes or have unusual proportions, made-to-measure options are available from several brands.

For guidance on measuring and choosing the right size, see our compression fitting guides or contact our team for personalised advice.

Is Compression Right for You?

Compression tights are suitable for most people, but certain conditions require medical advice before use. If you have arterial disease, peripheral neuropathy, heart failure, or skin conditions affecting your legs, please consult your GP or specialist before wearing compression hosiery. See our guide to contraindications for more information.
